A maypole festival is a may day festival which takes place around the end of springtime, beginning of summer or midsummer in some European countries. The may pole celebration involves alot of alcohol consumption, and the act of uncontrollable behaviour of sexual immorality.
On the festival; people dance around a wooden pole which is made in the form of a penis. In the places like Sweden, the maypole is designed in a form of a male penis. In the other parts of Europe the design of the maypole can differ a little bit in design.
The symbolic meaning of the festival.
The symbolic meaning of the maypole stands for the point where the lower (Earth), and the above (heaven) meets into a fellowship of sexual intercourse.
That’s why the the maypole is designed at the top with a triangle and two rings on each side (the form of a male penis).
The pointing side of the maypole is pointing into the ground. Symbolically signifying the image of a male’s private part (penis), planting it’s seed (sperm) into the earth.
Some scholars classify maypoles as symbols of the world axis (axis mundi).
The festival it self derives it’s rituals from the Germanic paganism.
This festival is found in the nations of Germanic Europe and the neighbouring areas which they have influenced.
It has been a recorded practice in many parts of Europe throughout the Medieval and Early Modern periods.
