Toxicology (from the Greek words τοξικός – toxicos “poisonous” and logos) is a branch of biology, chemistry, and medicine concerned with the study of the adverse effects of chemicals on living organisms.
It is the study of symptoms, mechanisms, treatments and detection of poisoning, especially the poisoning of people.

Ibn Wahshiya wrote the Book on Poisons in the 9th or 10th century which became widely spread into the western European style of making medicine.
The book he wrote contained compiled information about the ancient Egyptian and Babylonian ways of making magic, sorcery and poison.
Ibn Wahshiyya (Arabic: أبو بكر أحمد بن وحشية, Abu Bakr Ahmed ibn ‘Ali ibn Qays al-Wahshiyah; fl. 9th/10th centuries) was an Iraqi alchemist, agriculturalist, farm toxicologist, egyptologist and historian born at Qusayn near Kufa in Iraq.
Ibn al-Nadim (in Kitab al-Fihrist) lists a large number of books on magic, statues, offerings, agriculture, alchemy, physics and medicine, that were either written, or translated from older books, by Ibn Wahshiyya.

He wrote a toxicology treatise Book of Poisons, combining contemporary science, magic and astrology. The scientific methods of toxicology are widely applied in the field of pharmacology.
