The word meditation comes from the Latin word meditārī,
which has a range of meanings including to reflect on, to academically study, to chant a passage,
to read out loud, to recite or to listen to someone attentively with a focused mindset.
As one is focusing his thoughts upon what is he or she is chanting or listening to, in that state of meditation,
a person can be able to tap into a spiritual frequency that connects his Soul,
spirit and psychological mindset into the spiritual realm of ideas, inspiration thoughts, energies, vision etc.
Joshua 1:8:
This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth,
but you shall meditate in it day and night,
that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it,
For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.
The kings of Israel were commanded to meditate daily:
The Kings of Israel were commanded to meditate on the word of God daily,
and one of the ways in which they did this practice of meditating was to have readers who recited the passages from the word (Torah) of God,
(the reciting was some times done in a melodic form),
and as they were reciting, the king was listening attentively,
focusing all his thoughts upon what they were proclaiming through their chanting.
Psalm 19:14:
Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart Be acceptable in Your sight,
O Lord, my strength and my Redeemer.
Psalm 49:3:
My mouth shall speak wisdom, And the meditation of my heart shall give understanding.
Christian meditation is the process of deliberately focusing on specific thoughts (such as a bible passage),
and reflecting on their meaning in the context of the love of God.
Psalm 1:2:
But his delight is in the law of the Lord, And in His law he meditates day and night.
Meditation enables one’s memory to recall, remember and to also bring into practice what one has remebered.
From the Hebrew (Jewish) style of meditation that is where the weekly Torah portion (weekly bible Scripture reading, parashat) derives its origin from.
