During the holiday of Sukkot (Feast of tabernacles) some Jews recite the ushpizin prayer which symbolises the welcoming of seven “exalted guests” into the sukkah.
These ushpizin (Aramaic אושפיזין ‘guests’), represent the seven shepherds of Israel: Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Moses, Aaron, Joseph and King David. According to tradition, each night a different guest enters the sukkah followed by the other six.
Each of the ushpizin has a unique lesson which teaches the parallels of the spiritual focus of the day on which they visit.
A new tradition has arisen among some Jews to invite seven female counterparts to the above shepherds. A number of different lists exist which may include any of the following: Sarah, Rebecca, Rachel, Leah, Miriam, Deborah, Esther, Ruth, and Tamar among others.
Sukkot falls in Autumn time during the agriculture season of Autumn harvest, and because this fact that the harvesting of autumn fruits occurs at the same time with the celebration of the feast of tabernacles (Sukkot),
The feast becomes a time frame of harvesting or receiving spiritual and physical blessings from God.
Sukkot celebrated in the year 2013 has marked the season of harvesting the blessings attached to the 7 (seven) covenants that the Hebrew God ever made with man.
