– We want to get into a dialogue with SVT (Swedish national television) Among other things, we believe that the image of Tensta as shown by the media is not the whole truth, ‘said Alex Ngabo, founder of The Voice of Tensta.

The criticism directed at SVT is relevant –
There are few people who watch SVT (Swedish national tv) in the country’s immigrant-dense neighborhoods.
This was one of the views that came from the citizens of Tensta when SVT visited Tensta a suburb in Stockholm on Monday night to discuss diversity and representation.
There are several explanations. Many people choose to watch TV from their former homelands, some find it difficult to keep up with the programs in Swedish because of language barrier while others do not think that SVT is relevant to them.
President Hanna Stjärne has from day one, she has been clear that she sees this as one of their major challenges. Therefore, she requested that SVT’s diversity policy should be revised fundamentally.

Tydlig kritik mot SVT
All that is positive in our area, no one is interested to show it on the Swedish tv Alex Ngabo said from the Voice of Tensta.
It is only when some frustrated youth burn cars and other criminal behaviors which happens in Tensta, that is when the Swedish television comes to film and expose the bad things that are going on.
So all the immigrants in the area are considered to be criminals because of the negative image that the media portrays about Tensta.
For two hours, a number of 90 to 60 residents of Tensta and three representatives from SVT (Swedish national tv) discussed about everything concerning tv programming, entertainment, power issues (who makes the decisions on how SVT- Swedish television is structured) etc…
All kompetens som finns
All the expertise available – It is good to acknowledge and admit that we have not done a good work as we should.
It’s not just that you are not represented or that our programs are not relevant.
It is also because we do not have access to all the competence available here, said Karin Hübinette, project manager at SVT.
– This is the first step in our process of change, and we are here because we want to find people and groups that we can cooperate with.
Dag Strömqvist project manager for talent and diversity integration of SVT said that; this dialogue is intended to make SVT more relevant for everyone living in the country’s suburbs.
– We are here to listen to your suggestions, but I also want to be honest. It doesn’t mean that after our dialogue we gonna start right a way to embark on this project, this is a process which will take it’s time.
One of the suggestions that came up was that SVT should create a reference group with participants from the suburbs. It would be an easy and quick way to give all those who today stand outside the corporate power structures of SVT a voice.

Dialog måste ske på lika villkor
After two intense hours of an open discussion, Karin Hübinette said that the criticism directed towards SVT is relevant.
Not least when it comes to the news conveyed from the suburbs by SVT – Now is the time for us to ensure that something concrete happens, this must not become another meeting with empty promises.
