The word for “sacrifice”- “karbon” is from the root of the word for “closeness”. “drawing closer” – to draw closer to God via the act of bringing an offering, tithing or sacrificing.
The Hebrew word “karbon” means to sacrifice, but also the word Karbon means; to draw closer to God, to give an offering or to return to God.
(To turn a way from evil) through the principle of sacrificing one’s animalistic traits, which led to the physical state or act of drawing closer to God as in Leviticus 9:2-5).
Clean animals and material things of value were offered as a token of tzedakah to God by the Children of Israel.
Leviticus 9:2-5New King James Version (NKJV):
2 And he said to Aaron, “Take for yourself a young bull as a sin offering and a ram as a burnt offering, without blemish, and offer them before the Lord.
3 And to the children of Israel you shall speak, saying, ‘Take a kid of the goats as a sin offering, and a calf and a lamb, both of the first year, without blemish, as a burnt offering,
4 also a bull and a ram as peace offerings, to sacrifice before the Lord, and a grain offering mixed with oil; for today the Lord will appear to you.’”
5 So they brought what Moses commanded before the tabernacle of meeting. And all the congregation drew near (drew closer) and stood before the Lord God.
Good Shabbos!
