Melchizedek, Melkisetek, or Malki Tzedek (Mel.Kiz.e.dek/; Hebrew: מַלְכִּי־צֶדֶֿק malkī-ṣeḏeq, “my king is righteousness”; Amharic: መልከ ጼዴቅ malkī-ṣeḏeq; Armenian: Մելքիսեդեք, Melkisetek), is the king of Salem and priest of El Elyon.
The name is composed from the two elements Melek(h) “king” and sedeq “righteous(ness)”.
With the addition of the enclitic possessive pronoun, malk-ī means “my king”, so that the name literally translates to “my king is righteousness” (or “my king is Sedeq”).
The word Sedeq also derives the word “Sadakah”.
The word “Sadakkah” means to give an offering, religious offering, to tithe, to sacrifice, to surrender, to give honor and reverence to a king, to treat with dignity, to crown a king by giving him the honor due to his throne, to subscribe one’s character into the status of becoming righteous (right standing with God)
When the king is honored (RoshaHashanah), then in return He gives back favor, blessings, and authority according to the capacity of the recipient.
Hebrews 7:1-2 (NKJV)
The King of Righteousness
7 For this Melchizedek, king of Salem, priest of the Most High God, who met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings and blessed him,
2 to whom also Abraham gave a tenth part of all, first being translated “king of righteousness,” and then also king of Salem, meaning “king of peace,”
Chazalic literature – specifically Targum Jonathan, Targum Yerushalmi, and the Babylonian Talmud – presents the name (מלכי־צדק) as a nickname title for Shem, the son of Noah.
In Christianity, according to the Epistle to the Hebrews, Yeshua HaMashiac whom the Christian call Jesus is identified as “a priest forever in the order of Melchizedek”, and so Yeshua Hamashiac assumes the role of High Priest once and for all.
Reference between the messhiac and Melchizedek appears in subsequent biblical verses:
Genesis 14:18-20; I Samuel 13 Psalm 110:1-10
Matthew 22:44; 26:26-28 Luke 22:19;
Mark 14:22 John 6:53 Acts 2:34
I Corinthians 11:23-25
Hebrews 4:14-15; 5:6; 5:10; 6:19-20; 7:1-21.
Revelation 1:6.
