PALMA. It is one of Sweden’s most beloved tourist destinations.
But now Mallorca is tired of the tourists.
Several local protest organizations require local authorities to stop all Swedes, Brits and Germans from destroying the island.
– It’s serious now. Mallorca is collapsing, says the geographer Gerard Hau.
At the same time, Spaniards continue to sign an open letter where some local entrepreneurs and residents demand that police and local authorities stop the consequences of “cheap tourism”.
In the open letter on Change.org, they write that they have had enough and can no longer tolerate tourists urinatin or vomiting the streets, having group sex in different parks at night, fighting and vandalizing.
One also writes that you are tired of finding sprays, drug injections or needle and glass shards on beaches.
“Residents can not live side by side with this kind of cheap tourism where everything is allowed …
This is not quality tourism, this is to abuse and overuse our resources, and at a cheap price,” the letter says as over 11000 people already signed.
The letter points out Magaluf, Punta Ballena and Palma Nova as areas “exploited”.
They do not speak for deaf ears.
The local authorities in the Balearic islands have also asked the EU and Spain’s government for a restriction of alcohol sales on airplanes and airports because they are so affected by “anti-social tourism”.
“More and more respond to tourism,” says Marc Morell at Ciutat per a qui l’habita. And it’s not just here. It happens all over the world. Venice has worse problems than us. And we recently received a delegation from Lisbon who also has problems. You also see that this happens on a smaller scale in Berlin and Stockholm. This is going to hit Sweden too.
