The underworld or netherworld is an otherworld thought to be deep underground, Hades, Abyss, or beneath the surface of the world in most religions and mythologies.
Typically, it is a place where the souls of the departed go, an afterlife or a realm of the dead also known as Sheol in some of the biblical scriptures.
It has come to be known by different names, names like Gehenna, pit of hell, Hades, the belly or womb of Hell etc….
Chthonic is the technical adjective for things of the underworld.
Abraham’s bosom:
In the underworld there is also a separated place known as the Bosom of Abraham, the Greek religious ancient scholars named it; Elysium or Elysian Fields.
Where the righteous deceased souls that deed good deeds (Mitzavah) in their previous life, go to rest into the bosom of Abraham, and wait for the final judgement day of ressurection.
Luke 16:23-24 (NKJV)
23 And being in torments in Hades, he lifted up his eyes and saw Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.
24 “Then he cried and said, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.’
1 Corinthians 15:52
In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.
In the other region where those who did the wicked deeds of immorality are preserved after death:
Proverbs 1:12
Let us swallow them alive like Sheol, And whole, like those who go down to the Pit;
Psalm 116:3 (NKJV)
3 The pains of death surrounded me, And the pangs of Sheol laid hold of me;I found trouble and sorrow.
Isaiah 5:14
Therefore Sheol has enlarged itself And opened its mouth beyond measure; Their glory and their multitude and their pomp, And he who is jubilant, shall descend into it.
Isaiah 28:18
Your covenant with death will be annulled, And your agreement with Sheol will not stand; When the overflowing scourge passes through, Then you will be trampled down by it.
Isaiah 38:18
For Sheol cannot thank You, Death cannot praise You; Those who go down to the pit cannot hope for Your truth.
…because they continuously drink from the river of forgetfulness
In the Greek mythologies Sheol was referred to as the underworld of Hades:
The Greek underworld, in mythology, is an otherworld where souls go after death.
This is the original Greek idea of afterlife.
At the moment of death, the soul is separated from the corpse, taking on the shape of the former person, and is transported to the entrance of the Underworld.
The Underworld itself is described as being either at the outer bounds of the ocean or beneath the depths or ends of the earth.
Isaiah 28:15 –
Sheol a place where lies and falsehood derive their root or source:
Because you have said, “We have made a covenant with death, And with Sheol we are in agreement.
When the overflowing scourge passes through, It will not come to us, For we have made lies our refuge, And under falsehood we have hidden ourselves.”
The belly of Hell is where false dreams, deception, and all kind of lies which misleads, and makes humanity to rebel against God’s commandments derive their root from.
It is considered to be the belly of dark troubles, wars, and the kingdom of the dead that corresponds to the kingdom of the pagan evil gods.
Hades is a realm invisible to the living, made solely for the dead, where torments against the wicked dead souls are carried out.
