Indirect rule is a system of government used by the British and French to control parts of their colonial empires, particularly in Africa and Asia, through pre-existing local power structures.
These dependencies were often called “protectorates” or “trucial states”.
By this system, the day-to-day government and administration of areas both small and large was left in the hands of traditional rulers, who gained prestige and the stability and protection afforded by the Pax Britannica, at the cost of losing control of their external affairs,
And often of taxation, communications, and other matters, usually with a small number of European “advisors” effectively overseeing the government of large numbers of people spread over extensive areas.
Imposing of tax:
The taxes which were imposed on the people under the rule of indirect rule, these taxes and tax collectors were always a signed and put into force by the Colonial leadership.
Some British colonies were ruled directly by the Colonial Office in London, while others were ruled indirectly through local rulers who are supervised behind the scenes by British advisors or administrators.
Divide and rule: – The grooming of corrupted leaders
British administrators were asigned to administrate and also elect the type of agents which they have chosen among the local people, these chosen agents were showen more favor, and they were elected for the sake of collecting tax, and having dominion over the other groups of people.
Which led to the state of abusing of their authority, corruption and the descriminating of the other tribes which belonged to the oposite side of the elected agents.
Strife and conflicts began to take place between the elected agents and those tribes that the elected agents were oppressing.
The oppressed are transformed into a political party that opposes the oppressor:
After creating enmity between those that Colonial master is favoring, and those that are oppressed by the group of people which Colonial leadership had put in the positions of prestige, the British began to train an army or soldiers among those people that derive out of the oppressed tribes.
The oppressed tribes became the recruited members that now Britain was training with the aim of transforming their anger and bitter feelings into the state of revenge and opposition.
These trained soldiers began influencing the members of their tribes.
The influence eventually turned into a political movement which was in opposition against their oppressors.
Marketing of guns:
Guns, weapons or ammunitions were offered unto them by the British which became the same weapons that were used in their tribal conflicts.
