In psychology, sublimation is a mature type of defence mechanism where socially unacceptable impulses or idealizations are consciously transformed into socially acceptable actions or behaviors.

The converting the initial impulse in the long term. Freud defines sublimation as the process of deflecting and converting sexual instincts into acts of higher social valuation that can benefit a community.

Sublimation is also used in the realm of being “an especially conspicuous cultural development; it is what makes it possible for higher psychical activities, scientific, artistic or ideological, to play such an important part in civilised life”. 

Wade and Tavris present a similar view stating that sublimation is when displacement “serves a higher cultural or socially useful purpose, as in the creation of art or inventions.”


Converting & transforming negative energies into positive energies:

Sublimation allows us to act out socially our unacceptable negative impulses, and through sexual sublimation, these same negative impulse can be converted into a more acceptable form of energies. 

For example: a group of people in a society may be participating in the acts of immorality which produces negative energies into the environment, but on the other hand; those same energies can be converted into positive energies through a holy marriage, where sexual energies or sexual sublimation is aimed at the art or mitzvah of creating a society which is governed by positive moral values.  


A person experiencing extreme anger might take up kick-boxing as a means of venting frustration. Freud believed that sublimation was a sign of maturity (indeed, of civilization), allowing people to function normally in culturally acceptable ways.


When people in a community choose to cultivate or transform their bad emotional experiences and feelings via the cultural behaviour of dancing, singing, acting, socializing, and the increasing of pleasurable activities, this enables the positive sexual energies released into the enviroment to elevate the cultural energies into positive energies that can benefit a soceity of people in a positive way.
