Research has proven that today’s teenagers in the stage of adolescence are likely to choose celebrities (sports stars, music stars, film stars etc) as their role models due to the publicity that they get via the media.
The ever-widening reach of the media in popular culture has elevated certain celebrities to worldwide acclaim of role models.
Most of these celebrities lack the qualities of a true role model, but because of media publicity, this has enabled them to take the role as hostage.
This boom of media coverage and constant exposure to these individuals resulted in a change of mindset toward celebrities in both adults and youth alike.
According to a survey of teachers in the United Kingdom conducted in 2008 by the Association of Teachers and Lecturers, young people most frequently chose sports stars as role models, followed by pop stars.
Many, however, simply aspired to be “famous for being famous”, believing that fame and fortune could be easily accessed through reality television.
This mindset that is promoted by the media has contradicted the image of role models, which has led to negative influence of immoral behaviors that the celebrities portray into the lives of those that idolize them.
