The priest layed his hands upon the goat and envoked all the sins of the congregation Israel upon it:
In the Bible, a scapegoat is an animal which is ritually burdened with the sins of others, then driven away.
The concept first appears in Leviticus 16:8-10 in which a goat is designated to be cast into the desert to carry away the sins of the community.
The scape goat was that which carried the quilt or blame of the people.
Some writtings declares that:
the scape goat took the blame which the people in the congregation of Israel had failed to manage as their own responsibility or atone for.
The releasing of the scape goat to go out in the wilderness with the people’s sins was a temporary type of method which did not fully attain to the redemption and atonement that God desired His people to have.
And Aaron shall cast lots upon the two goats: one lot for the LORD, and the other lot for Azazel.
— Leviticus 16:8-10, Jewish Publication Society (1917)
Practices with some similarities to the scapegoat ritual also appears in ancient Greece and Ebla.
Jewish sources in the Talmud (Yoma 6:4,67b) give the etymology of azazel as a compound of az, strong or rough, and el, mighty, that the goat was sent from the most rugged or strongest of mountains.
From the Targums onwards the term azazel was also seen by some rabbinical commentators as the name of a Hebrew demon, angelic force, or pagan deity.
Today this fallen angel of demon has been worshiped as Baphomet the demon of sex magic among the nations that practise pagan rituals.
