The Hebrew word Shavuot means; Feast of Weeks.
Shavout is a Jewish holiday that occurs on the sixth day of the 3rd Hebrew month called “Sivan“, falling around (late May or early June) in summer.
Shavuot is called the Festival of Weeks (Hebrew: חג השבועות, Ḥag ha-Shavuot, Exodus 34:22, Deuteronomy 16:10); Festival of Reaping (Hebrew: חג הקציר, Ḥag ha-Katsir, Exodus 23:16), and Day of the First Fruits.
The Giving birth of a king:
King David was born on Shavuot in Bethlehem.
Giving of the Torah on mount Sinai:
Shavuot commemorates the anniversary of the day when God gave the Torah to the entire nation of Israel as they assembled at Mount Sinai.
It’s also the same time when the 72 nation or languages were birthed forth during the building of the Tower of Babel.
Marriage of Boaz and Ruth:
Boaz who eventually married Ruth, and their relationship gave rise to the scion of the Jewish monarchy and King David ultimately descended from her
Our tradition teaches that the Mashiach (The Messiah), the future king of the Jewish people, will be born or come from that line as well.
Since David was born on Shavuot, we read the story of his ancestry on that day.
The Torah mandates the seven-week Counting of the Omer, beginning on the second day of Passover and immediately followed by Shavuot. This counting of days and weeks is understood to express anticipation and desire for the Giving of the Torah.
On Passover, the people of Israel were freed from their enslavement to Pharaoh; on Shavuot they were given the Torah and became a nation committed to serving God.
Since Shavuot occurs 50 days after Passover, Hellenistic Jews gave it the name Pentecost (πεντηκοστή, “fiftieth day”).
During the existence of the Temple in Jerusalem, an offering of two loaves of bread from the wheat harvest was made on Shavuot.
Ruth worked in the fields of Boaz, beginning from spring time (Passover -Barley harvest), and worked until the wheat harvest which falls on Pentecost summer time, thus leading to the marriage of Boaz and Ruth as in Ruth1:22 & Ruth 2:2123.
